NHL – The Greast Sport of All
The NHL or National Hockey League is the highest professional hockey league in the United States and Canada. The NHL currently is made up of of 30 teams of which 24 are based in the United States. In many opinions the NHL is not just the highest hockey league in North America it is also the leading professional hockey league across the globe.
As is expected the NHL generally follows fairly traditional hockey rules. Other than Olympic hockey games there are usually no other major hockey types that use a different rule set. The NHL even uses a little different sized ice rink than Olympic games; though some players say the difference just doesn’t have much of an impact on the match. Standard NHL matches are based on the number of goals scored in three periods; as expected the winner is the team that has the most points at the end of standard time.
The NHL is pretty much like most other professional leagues in the way they choose a championship team. The NHL season is made up of a playoff system every year which is used to pick the final champion. In the United States the NHL is considered to be one of the 4 top sports along with the NFL, MLB and NBA; in Canada however the NHL is definitely the most watched sports league.
Regardless of national differences the NHL has recently been fighting to draw the viewers many advertisers look for. The NHL’s popularity has been fading in many areas; leading to a massive advertising and fan campaign in the past couple of seasons. The NHL has been successful in building some sort of a viewer base in many places; though many teams and venues still struggle. Overall the NHL is an interesting and exciting league which does well regardless of the number of viewers.
