AFL 2016 – YES 2016 – What are the AFL up to now ?
The AFL has announced a restructure of Victorian football as part of building a stronger national organization designed to support and grow the game at all levels.
PART of the above annoincement included the following :-
“Victoria is an engine room of Australian football and the AFL is committed to protecting and growing the game in the state,” he said. “As we embark on a strategic plan for the game towards 2016 we need to work even more closely with staff, community leagues and VFL clubs to maintain the game’s pre-eminent position in Victoria.”
MY Q> What is the happening in 2016 that needs a 5 year strategic plan ?
EDIT – Could it be the announcement or start of Teams 19 & 20 ?
After having read the article on this. there seems to be a couple of issues on their agenda. and by making these changes. it will address these issues in the best possible way.
1) although not mentioned in that article. you would have to assume that the AFL are concerned. about how popular soccer and basketball are fast becoming in Victoria.
2) the recent announcement of a new 2nds, curtain raiser if you like. competition funded by Foxtel.
By making these necessary changes. it will no doubt keep Australian Rules Footy very much alive and healthy. in its home state in Victoria.
I would like to make a mention about Grant “O” Riley. a very good friend from my school days. ex Port Melbourne footy champ. played 78 games for the borough. was a member of that fantastic team that won the 1980 grand final against Minnor Premiers Coburg.
He is the chair of the current board. and would make a great contribution if he takes up a position. on the new board when formed. a very smart move by the AFL.
