Mlb Valuations

January 22nd, 2011

Every year Forbes publishes incomes of MLB teams, but what do these numbers mean?

Forbes publishes revenues, valuations, and operating incomes for all of the Major League Baseball teams. One of the categories is “Operating Income,” which to me seems to suggest the raw profits (revenue – expenses) that the individual club brought in. Surely these teams are bringing in more money than this report seems to suggest. For example, in 2009 it seems to indicate that the NY Yankees had an operating income of $25 million, which seems absurdly low.

Any thoughts? Here is a link to it:

Even given that it is EBITDA, surely the Yankees (and some other clubs) are making in the hundreds of millions, no?

The operating income figures are footnoted to indicate that they represent EBITDA.

The Yankees have the highest revenue numbers of any team…but isn’t their payroll astronomical?
