What is the difference between a Router and an Ethernet switch?

DON’T SAY SWITCHES CAN’T connect multiple devices to the internet because I have a switch in place of my old router that sucked. My modem is hooked up to my gigabit Ethernet switch and my PS3, XBOX, laptop and Home PC are all hooked into my switch. I can use them all simultaneously – Watch MLB TV on laptop, play xbox online, surf the web on my home computer and its FASTER and NO LAG compared to my old ROUTER. WHY IS EVERYONE telling me that this is impossible and that I need a router. I have been looking all over the web and it keeps on telling me this is impossible.
I am using the Lynksis SE2500 5port gigabit ethernet switch.
it is a Motorola surfboard SB5100 cable modem from time warner cable, pretty sure it is not a router.

Because most likely you have a modem/router, not just a modem
Since you did not list the manufacturer and model of your “modem” we cannot be sure.
But assuming this is the case, then with your old setup you were actually going through two routers to get to the Internet, which would not be optimal
With your current setup, you just have one router. The one that is in the modem.

But in any case, you MUST have a router in the system. You cannot connect one network (your home LAN) to the ISP’s network without one

Edit – Just to be clear, a router connects two networks, while a switch connects devices on the same network
