Why are the stores that you trade video games to so cheap?
I asked to trade gears of war 2 and mlb 2k8 for left 4 dead and they said that i would be looking at a 29 dollar difference. Why are they so cheap when it comes to that kind of stuff?
Game stores do have to make a profit and the only real profit that they make is off of your used games and consoles. Brand new merchandise will only make them a few bucks. Gears of War 2 brand new would cost them anywhere from $47-53 to buy from a vendor so they buy a ton of these games, then they have sales associates push them on customers to buy so they have a higher trade in rate. When you go to trade the game in and they tell you they can give you $15-25 for a game you just bought for $60, this profit margin covers a few things. Yes they have to pay bills, rent, employees, and electricity, but they also have to pay out franchise fees depending on the store which can make them lose money on stuff too. This difference will also cover their losses if they have a customer use a coupon for a used game, if the game gets damaged or returned, and most importantly if they get 30 copies back of Gears of War 2 and can’t sell the used ones, eventually they are going to price drop and the store can lose a ton on used merch that doesn’t sell. Consoles are even worse to trade in. A new Wii would cost them $248 and they sell it for $249, so if they can’t sell you on games and accessories, they lose money. Sometimes you can get a good deal on trades, I only trade if I can get more for it in store than on ebay (stores have higher prices sometimes) Used games are just the only way these stores make any money.
