MLB Fantasy Draft Question?

Hey all, this is my first year doing Fantasy Baseball, and i know looking at categories is very important. So i wanted to ask you all how should i adjust my draft tomorrow for these categories: 16 teams H 2 H. Anything to look for? Tips opinions??? I just dont know how to focus on my draft tomorrow. Any help at all is greaaaatly appreciated.

Roster Positions: C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, Util, Util, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P, P, P, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, DL, DL

Batters Stat Categories: Runs (R), Hits (H), Home Runs (HR), Runs Batted In (RBI), Stolen Bases (SB), Walks (BB), Batting Average (AVG), On-base Percentage (OBP), Slugging Percentage (SLG), Extra Base Hits (XBH), Stolen Base Percentage (SB%)

Pitchers Stat Categories: Innings Pitched (IP), Wins (W), Saves (SV), Strikeouts (K), Batters Grounded Into Double Plays (GIDP), Holds (HLD), Earned Run Average (ERA), (Walks + Hits)/ Innings Pitched (WHIP), Strikeouts per Walk Ratio (K/BB), Quality Starts (QS)

You will be jumping right into the deep end with this league for your first fantasy baseball experience. That is a ton of stats to keep track of and 16 teams is a lot. With a league that deep you are going to be stuck with a lot of players that won’t be very good (and most other teams will be like that too). The default league for Yahoo! is 12 teams, 5 stats for hitters and 5 stats for pitchers (5 x 5), you are doing 11 x 10.

Anyway, since that is your situation and it’s too late to abandon ship, here are some tips:

1) Before picking a player, think “how many stat groups can this guy help me win each week?” H2H means there are 21 possible points each week each for you or the other team, and you want to win at least 12 or 13 every week.

2) There are 21 stat categories and the only one that a closer can help you is saves, so do NOT pick a star closer! Instead, look for pitchers with RP eligibility who will likely be starters. You want your team to win innings pitched EVERY week. If so, you will likely be successful. So maybe target guys like Francisco Liriano, AJ Happ, Matt Palmer, Phil Hughes or Joba Chamberlain, or Kawakami. Pick big hitters first and then later on get guys like this. A relief pitcher who gets a lot of holds is more valuable than a closer who only throws 55 innings.

3) Load up with big hitters first. Wait on the pitchers. Big power cleanup hitters will help a lot, and leadoff hitters for good lineups are your next target.

4) Try to get a top 5 catcher, 2B, and SS. You do NOT want to get stuck with the #15 catcher or shortstop. Outfield and 1B are deep, so if there are equal options at the moment pick a premier position before those two.
