Do you think there will ever be a starting left-handed throwing catcher in the big leagues?
So a friend and fellow baseball coach calls me the other day.”You have got to see this kid!” So I go to one of his practices. This kid has a cannon at catcher.Can throw to second base from his knees. The problem? He throws left handed. He has had scouts come to see him who have flat out said there isn’t a MLB club out there who would touch him if he continues to catch. They put him in LF last year, and he made 12 errors.He has only made two as a catcher. They say the theory behind there not being left handed catchers is that they are obstructed on throws to third by the batter.We put him through this, and with a slight footwork adjustment, he was able to make the throw accurately. Besides, how often do teams steal third base these days anyway? This kid has a cannon arm, and a major league ready bat. How do I get him past the left handed thing with scouts?
Ever is a long time and anything’s possible, but I highly, highly doubt it. The guy will be moved to another position long before he gets near the majors…
