Why won’t this man just retire?
I’m talking about Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman. I’m a Yankees fan so i’m pro Mariano! Trevor Hoffman is the all time leader in saves for the MLB with 596 & only 5 this year. Mo Rivera has 547 & 21 this year. Me & 99% of the world say Rivera is the best closer & one of the best pitchers who ever lived. Even most Red Sox fans have admitted this. Hoffman is 43 & he is total garbage. He is just making a fool of himself. For God’s sake his ERA is 8 something. I think the right thing to do is get the Hell out of Rivera’s way so he can take the record that is rightfully his. Rivera is 41 himself. Suppose he retire after the 2012 season & Hoffman after the 2011. Hoffman would probably have about 610 while Rivera may have about 600. Is Hoffman being a bad sportsman or is he right to hang around? Should he continue to make a fool of himself or let the real player take his rightful spot at the top?
A lot of great players hang on way too long. They love the game and want to keep playing and can’t believe they’ve really lost it. Why do you feel the need to pile on Hoffman just to build up Mo? You are right that pretty much everyone views Rivera as the greatest closer of all time, even Sox fans like me. Nobody is going to base their opinion purely on the total number of saves. Don’t worry, if Hoffman keeps playing this lousy, he’s not even going to get the chance to save 15 more games. He simply won’t be in the game at those points.
