Do you think if a 5’7″ guy like MLB record holder Hugh Duffy played today he could bat 438 like he did in 1894?
So i see in my baseball encyclopedia that this guy has the mlb single season record for highest batting avg ever in a year..
If he played today as a 5’7″ player would he be more like a .338 hitter like Chone Figgins instead of a .438 hitter?
Oh, c’mon. 1894 was a very unusual year for hitting.
For example, the league BA was .309 and the teams averaged 7.38 runs per game. Still a record.
The schedule was only 130 games long.
There were 11,796 runs scored in a total of 799 games played played, an average of 1,000 per team. The Boston team scored 1220 runs that season and the pennant winning Orioles scored 1,171.
Sliding Billy Hamilton scored 198 runs, still an MLB record.
Only one pitcher in the league (Amos Rusie) had an ERA under 3.00. A twenty seven game winner (Ted Breitenstein) gave up 497 hits and 320 runs. Wow!
Size had nothing to do with it. Duffy would be a star in any league and in any era, but neither he nor anyone else would ever play in such a high run scoring season again.
Anyway, Duffy’s BA was only 130 points higher than league batting average and that is not the record.
PS. The fans loved it, and set an attendance record for that year.
