Mlb Eligibility Rules

March 5th, 2011

Should the Federal Government regulate things like this…?

A 17-year old high school and college dropout was signed by the Washington Nationals for $10 million. I don’t begrudge success at all; however, it just seems wrong to me to allow a minor to enter professional sports with such a high salary, especially after dropping out of high school and college. Should the government intervene with rules regarding draft eligibility, age, salary cap, etc. for players under a certain age?

Baseball has long held an anti-trust exemption, which means they can pretty much do whatever they want.
I personally believe it’s time for that exemption to end.
