Should the Nationals be contracted if they fail to sign their first round pick for 2nd straight yr?

Last yr it was P-Aaron Crow. This yr it is gonna be P-Stephen Strasburg. So since they are the biggest laughing stock in sports bar-none and cannot even bring in the talent that the system is set up for them to get, should MLB disban the Nats? I know they cannot and won’t since they have a 1yr old taj mahal stadium in DC. It is a hypothetical question more than a realistic idea.

You are right – it’s not a realistic idea. MLB would be more likely to move them for the simple reason that they would need to contract 2 teams at least – you can’t have the odd team out sitting around when they could be drawing fans on a nice weekend.
I think a more realistic approach would be for MLB to try to implement a set structure for what draft picks can be paid. The NBA currently does this, setting limits on what a player can make for the first few years he plays. It would probably have to be done as part of the next collective bargaining agreement with the player’s union.
I personally don’t think ANY college player is worth the kind of money that Strasburg and the wonderful Scott Boras are asking for. And if these limits were in place, Strasburg would probably have almost 2 months on the minors by now. My thought is that you make it generous, maybe something along the lines of 15-16 million over the first 4 years of a contract. And if that amount of money is not worth it, let the players who feel they can get more going to Japan go ahead and do it for a few years. But keep the same guidelines in place until they play there for the number of years provided in the standard rookie contract. If the guidelines are set for 4 years, make them play a full 4 seasons somewhere else before becoming eligible for a larger contract from an MLB club.
And who knows. maybe that can be the first step in getting a salary cap in place? (And hopefully a salary floor as well – modeled somewhat after the current NFL system)
