mlb busts
Do you agree with this statement made by ESPN baseball writer and baseball HOF voter Buster Olney?

1. sportswriters should not vote on who gets in b/c it’s a clear conflict of interest

2. sportswriters should not be judgmental and act as the “morality police” of baseball

3. MLB and the HOF need to establish their own criteria for the hall to deal with admitted/busted/rumored PED users

4. It is not a sports writers job to create stories, It’s there job to follow stories.

I do agree with him. Buster used to write for the NY Times and their policy is that their writers cannot vote on the HoF or post season awards because it IS a conflict of interest.

EDIT: Mr Danger, I agree that the Hall is a private entity and thus is entitled to decide who gets to vote. But it is up to the editorial policies of the individual newspapers as to whether or not they allow their staff to participate. In a sense, the Hall is just a business but so are sports franchises. As sports has become “newsworthy” so have the various Halls of Fame and post-season awards, so the writers are in effect creating the stories they cover.

Of course, all of this is moot if we just recognize professional sports as entertainment and not news.
