Mlb Attendance Down 2010

February 22nd, 2010

Why does everyone bash Tampa Bay Devil Ray on attendance?

When they aren’t even the worse ones heres the list for 2010, from them down

from http://espn.go.com/mlb/attendance

23. Tampa Bay 1,537,035
24. Toronto 1,372,472
25 Baltimore 1,369,465
26 Kansas City 1,279,633
27 Pittsburgh 1,324,679
28 Florida 1,132,999
29 Oakland 1,162,821
30 Cleveland 1,150,319

People disparage all of those teams’ attendance numbers. Trust me, Kansas City and Oakland get made fun of a lot for their pitiful attendance figures. And Pittsburgh too – I went to a Pirates game this summer, and there was a full house – at least 35,000 fans. I was surprised, since they’re a losing team. I asked one of the people next to me if the Pirates always draw this many fans, and he laughed. It turned out that there was a concert by Steve Miller Band after the game, and all of the people were there to see that. They didn’t care about the game.

As for the Rays, they probably get more attention for their bad attendance because they’re the only winning team on that list. None of those other teams has a shot at the playoffs this year. Also, the Rays have a terrible stadium, so MLB is probably stirring the pot a little bit to get a new one built (unlike KC, Pittsburgh, and B-More, who have beautiful stadiums). If the Rays got a new field, I guarantee you they’d draw 35,000+ every game.
