Major League Baseballs Used

Was this official Major League baseball game used?
I was at a Kane County Cougars game (Minor League Affiliate to the Kansas City Royals) and a ball was sitting on the pitchers mound in the Bull Pen and I was just standing along the fence watching the players warm up and then the starting pitcher just came over and tossed the ball to me. I know the Cougars played against the Quad Cities River Bandits (Affiliate to the St. Louis Cardinals) on May 26, 2011 at Busch Stadium I know since it was a Minor League game they used an Official Minor League Baseball which is different (I have 2) Could they have picked it up from the St. Louis practice bucket which are sometimes old game used balls. There is no way to know for sure but just thought I should ask.
An official Major League ball used in a game will be marked as a Major League Ball and will be covered in a particular type of mud (there is 1 mud vendor that supplies all 30 MLB teams, he won’t allow cameras to show exactly where he gets the dirt or tell anyone exactly how much water he adds to it to make the perfect consistency mud). I’m not sure whether or not they also mud up practice balls. The mud is primarily for the pitchers, to improve their grip. I don’t know if they bother having a clubhouse attendant mud up all the balls that they are just using for batting practice and stuff like that. They might, I’m just not sure. But if there is no mud, it definitely isn’t game used.
