Is this a home run?
My son was playing little league the other day and he hit the ball towards left field, which was caught by a diving catch from the left fielder. But the left fielder actually fell over the (quite low) back fence and out of the baseball field. The umpire called it as a catch. Is this a home run or an out?
The ump made the correct call. A fielder can go over the wall while making a catch as long as he was still in play when he last left his feet. He couldn’t hop over the wall, land on the other side, and then catch the ball – that would be a HR, but if he catches the ball and then goes over the wall, that’s an out.
