Can’t remember book title?

A few years back, I read a charming book (just a good read, not Great Lit) about a baseball prodigy. He was from Mississippi and learned his baseball skills from his father (who later died in prison). He and his mother then moved to Chicago. I remember that he was so advanced for his age that he couldn’t play youth baseball because he was actually a danger to the other kids. Other details: he repaired an old pitching machine to develop his skills on his own; became the youngest player ever to play MLB; his mother was strongly religious and raised him so; book was written by a Mississippi author. Any help? Thanks

A reasonable gripe against a great number of sporting good themed toys has been their lack of versatility. Once a kid has surpassed the skill level engendered by the toy, the toy is pretty much useless, offering no further challenge to the burgeoning athlete. The Grow To Pro series, on the other hand, evolves with the kid presenting increasing challenges along the way. In this three level baseball…
