Buy Major League Baseballs
Would you buy a Major League baseball-themed casket?
I’m writing an article about a new line of baseball caskets and urns that are going to be released on Opening Day. If you’d be willing to take your loyalty to your favorite team to the grave, I’d really like to talk to you. The urns and caskets will be emblazoned with team logos and insignia. Do you think the idea will be a success?
I don’t know what the “premium” would be for a Major League baseball-themed casket, but I assume it would be at least a few thousand dollars, if not more. As a true Mets fan (since before I was born), I’d want that extra money spent on true support of the Mets. If my family didn’t need the cash for true necessities (food, shelter, etc.), I’d want to set up a fund to buy tickets for kids who otherwise wouldn’t be able to go to Mets games. Or donate it to a Mets charity that maybe makes the wishes of sick children come true, by meeting their Mets heroes or getting autographs or other souvenirs. Or I’d set up a fundraiser with the money and raffle off some really great seats, box seats or skybox seats — to get some excitement going. Or I’d give the money to my granddaughter and grandson so the can go down to spring training in Port St. Lucie.
The biggest problem I have with the idea is that the logo is going to be buried. Anyone who’s at my funeral knows I’m a Mets fan, whether it’s emblazoned on my coffin or not. To me, something more subtle — a Mets cap inside the casket, or an autographed ball — would more elegantly say the same thing. It’s a waste of fandom to bury your sign of allegiance.
