baseball cards outlet
Is it worth my time selling sports cards?

I (actually my dad) have boxes on top of boxes on top of boxes of sports cards. Football, baseball, basketball, and entire rooms filled with these boxes. There’s rares, signatures, superstar rookies, even quite a few vintage ones. It would take hours to go through and find any of the good ones. I checked ebay on some of the prices, and a lot of single items will sell for $2-3. The problem is that outlet is flooded with so many it would be hard to even turn a profit. My question is, is there ANY way to go about doing this to make it a less painful process? Whats the most efficient way of handling it? Is there any sort of trustworthy 3rd parties to handle everything? And is it even a worthwhile endeavor? Any insight into this greatly appreciated. Right now, The estimated value, judging by sheer volume, is roughly 200,000 – without consideration to high values, and understanding that they are only worth anything to people that actually want/are looking for them..

Hello there,

My brother and I used to deal in sports cards. This was prior to the internet and we set up at shows and the like.

The most easiest way to sell the entire collection is to find a dealer that would take it. You can expect to get a small fraction of the market value by selling in bulk. But that is the easies way to sell the entire collection. The difficult part of that is finding a dealer willing to take the collection.

When you say vintage are you talking about cards from 1970 on or are you talking about cards from the 1960s and back? If you mean the 60s and earlier, those markets are still pretty good. If you mean cards from the 80s and later, that market is much softer. The reason is the volume of cards printed. The cards from the 60s and earlier were made in much smaller numbers compared to the later made cards. I still have unopened wax boxes from the late 80s and early 90s sitting around. Those do not bring much.

Also, commons do not bring anywhere near book value. There is not much of a market for commons. At least the more recent commons. Used to be people built sets. They needed the commons to complete their set and thus there was a market for them. I do not see as many people building complete sets of recent years’ cards. Thus, there is little market for those. Commons from many years will bring you only a fraction of a cent a piece, if you can find someone to take them.

The way to get the most money for your cards is to put in the work and time to market them yourself. Separate the cards. Get a price guide to help you identify which have the better market value. Any truly valuable card should be professionally graded to get top dollar. That is costly, so you are not going to do it for cards that sell for a few dollars. eBay is an active market. That is why you see so many cards being listed there. You said you think that outlet is flooded and would be hard to turn a profit. That is not a symptom of problems with eBay, that is a symptom of the card market in general. What you see selling on eBay is a pretty good picture of what you can reasonable expect to receive for your cards. If a card will not sell on eBay, you will have a hard time finding any other easy outlet for that card.

Sheer volume does not mean big dollars. I have tens of thousands of cards sitting around. Most are worth less than a cent a piece, if I could find a buyer for them.

There is no way to make good money selling the collection without putting in some hard work to market it.
