2000 MItsubishi Eclipse GT Problem. Engine rattles and dies when no gas is coming to it (aka idle)?
I just recently spent $1300 for my car to get fixed and 2 weeks later, this happens. I had my distributor, gaskets, and spark plugs replaced. Does this sound like they could have messed something else up? This rattling first occurred once I hit highway speeds. It sounds identical to a kids bicycle who put a baseball card on their wheel. When I got off it continued through every gear (Stick Shift). When I reached my destination, I let it coast in neutral in which it died. It starts back up no problem then dies. I’ve figured out the trick to being able to get it going which is starting the car fast and giving it LOTS of gas. I pray for no red lights!

Make sure the throttle cable has a bit of play, if the throttle doesn’t close all the way the idle circuit won’t work. If the throttle body was not cleaned it should be cleaned next. The IAC motor needs to be checked out. I’d recommend the dealer for this, you need to have the factory Mutt II scan tool hooked up with the motor running to see if the PCM is trying to control the stepper motor in the IAC valve. A bad IAC valve/motor can fry the PCM circuit that controls it if not replaced soon after failing.
$1300 is way too much for the work you listed.
Tune up…3 hours labor + parts
Replace valve cover gaskets and tower seals during tune up…extra 1.0 hour labor.
That’s around $400 max. for labor, you telling me they hit you up $700 for parts? That’s more then factory parts cost!
