What would it take for this trade to happen…
The Sox are in desperate need of two things: A young Catcher of the Future and a Powerful Bat
The Orioles are in desperate need of three things: Pitching, Pitching, and Pitching
Here we go, the Orioles may have the best catching prospect of the last 15 years, in the person of Matt Weiters, who was ranked #1 overall prospect by Baseball America this year. He’s a beast, a switch-hitter who last year batted .350+ from both sides of the plate while hitting somewhere around 30 hr’s. In addition to avg and power, he’s also apparently a great defensive catcher and loaded with the “intangibles’ that Jason Varitek has.
The Sox have an abundance of young major league ready pitching waiting in the wings in Bucholtz, Bowden, and Bard. They also have 2 great position prospects in Lars Anderson and Josh Reddick.
What would it take to make this trade happen? Would the Orioles even consider it? Who would the Sox have to part with?
Very intriguing, but as it has been pointed out, division rivals are usually unlikely trading partners. For Boston’s part, I think they’re still trying to shake out their roster and determine what their needs will be come mid-summer. They’re (smartly so) very protective of their young pitching talent, but I’m betting Brad Penny is trade potential…I just don’t think they’ll get a frontline player for him. You make some good points though…can’t wait to see what happens.
