Unfortunately, college admissions is one of those real nail-biting, stressful periods of our lives. Very few people have the luxury of KNOWING that they’re going to be accepted to their dream school – unless their dream school isn’t a selective institution. No matter what your GPA, accomplishments or test scores, a competitive school makes some really razor-thin decisions based on a complicated, but yet very human analysis – and there is never any way to know for sure if this school or that school is CERTAIN to accept you.
It is certainly possible to gather information that will help you determine if it’s more or less LIKELY that you’ll be accepted, and we can certainly do that about MSU.
Looking at MSU’s recent admissions classes, the first thing that jumps out at me is that the middle 50% of ACT composite scores range from 23-27. Thinking about that for a minute, that means that 25% of the admitted students had scores below 23, so a 21 doesn’t mean you’re out of luck. It is, however, a “strike” on your scorecard.
The average high school GPA for admitted freshmen was 3.61, so again, your 3.3 is going to place you a little behind the curve. I’m sure you understand the concept of “average” enough to realize that there were plenty of admitted students with a GPA a bit below 3.61 – and there were plenty of students with GPAs higher than that, too.
As you’ll see if you review the information on MSUs admission website, the school focuses on high school grades, the “strength and quality of your curriculum”, recent trends in your academic performance, your class rank, your standardized test scores, and your “leadership, talents, conduct and diversity of experience”.
You didn’t mention in your question about the “strength” of your curriculum – it’s no secret that schools like to see students who have taken challenging courses – the AP classes, calculus, physics, anatomy, stuff like that, rather than “shop”, “office aid” and “Earth science”. If your classes were tough, that allows you to “make up” for a somewhat less glowing GPA.
You’re also correct to notice that the lack of a foreign language is going to count against you. The “recommended” curriculum for MSU includes not just one, but TWO years of a single foreign language. I’m sure they have accepted students without the language classes under their belts, but again, that’s another strike.
Your positives are strong and obvious – the admissions office will be impressed by your athletic prowess and by your community volunteerism and class service. Those will all work in your favor.
Will you be accepted? No one can say. Your GPA and your ACT score both rate a little low by average standards, but not everyone is average. If I were in your shoes, (or should I say cleats?), I’d apply to MSU, but I’d be sure to apply to some ‘safety’ schools, too. You may well get into East Lansing, but you’re going to have to deal with the excruciating wait, just like (almost) everyone else.
Good luck to you!
